Sarla Aviation, an aerospace startup aiming to revolutionize urban transportation through electric flying taxis, has successfully raised $10 million in funding. The funding round was led by Accel, a prominent venture capital firm, with participation from angel investors such as Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, and Swiggy’s Sriharsha Majety. The Bengaluru-based startup, founded in 2024, plans to use the funds to establish a research and development center, expand its team, and refine its technology. Sarla Aviation’s first prototype, named Shunya, will be showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo on January 17, 2025. The company plans to begin commercial operations by 2028, starting with airport transfers in Bengaluru, and later expanding to other major cities across India.

Introduction to Sarla Aviation’s Vision and Mission

Sarla Aviation, named after Sarla Thukral, India’s first female pilot, is setting its sights on tackling one of the biggest challenges facing urban India today: traffic congestion. In a country with rapidly growing cities, especially Bengaluru, traffic jams are a daily reality for millions. Sarla Aviation intends to offer a practical and sustainable solution with electric flying taxis. These air taxis will not only help reduce traffic congestion but also make commuting more efficient and eco-friendly. The company has a bold mission—to provide affordable and convenient air travel in urban settings.

Founded by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan in 2024, Sarla Aviation seeks to develop electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to create a seamless flying taxi service for Indian cities. The goal is to ease the transportation burden in congested urban areas, contributing to a cleaner and more efficient future for the aviation industry. What sets Sarla Aviation apart is its approach to integrating cutting-edge technology with the ever-growing demands of urban mobility.

The Founders and Their Backgrounds

The founders of Sarla Aviation bring a wealth of experience and expertise from various industries. Adrian Schmidt, one of the co-founders, previously worked at Munich-based air taxi venture Lilium and held roles at automotive giants Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. His background in the automotive and aviation sectors gives him the perfect knowledge to navigate the electric air taxi industry. Schmidt moved to Bengaluru in 2023, recognizing India’s immense market potential for this innovative solution.

Rakesh Gaonkar and Shivam Chauhan, the other two co-founders, have extensive experience in the aerospace and technology sectors. Their collective expertise, along with Schmidt’s international experience, equips Sarla Aviation to tackle the challenges of creating an efficient, safe, and affordable electric air taxi service. This mix of local insight and global knowledge is a key factor in the company’s potential success.

The Revolutionary Product: Shunya

The first product Sarla Aviation is developing is the Shunya—an electric flying taxi capable of carrying six passengers and a pilot, along with a total payload of up to 680 kilograms. The Shunya prototype is set to be revealed at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi on January 17, 2025. In contrast to typical electric air taxis that usually carry two to four passengers, Sarla Aviation has focused on increasing capacity while maintaining optimal performance. With a 160-kilometer range, the Shunya is built for short-distance, high-efficiency travel, making it perfect for city commutes.

Designed to meet the rising demand for rapid, affordable, and eco-friendly transport in urban environments, the Shunya aims to redefine how we approach city travel. The ability to carry more passengers while maintaining a shorter flight range allows the company to offer a competitive pricing model, making it an attractive option for the average commuter. The focus on electric propulsion further supports Sarla Aviation’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting clean energy solutions.

Funding Round and Strategic Goals

Sarla Aviation’s recent funding round raised $10 million, led by Accel, a prominent venture capital firm with a track record of supporting innovative startups. The round also saw participation from high-profile angel investors, including Binny Bansal, co-founder of Flipkart; Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha; and Sriharsha Majety, co-founder of Swiggy. This group of investors brings invaluable resources and credibility to the young startup.

The funding will be used to establish a research and development center in Bengaluru, which will be crucial for developing the technology behind the electric air taxis. Sarla Aviation also plans to expand its team beyond its current size of 30 employees, bringing in more talent to drive the development of future prototypes. With this funding, the company aims to refine its technology, ensuring that it can provide safe, reliable, and efficient air taxis to the masses.

Sarla Aviation’s Commercial Roadmap

The startup has outlined an ambitious roadmap for launching its commercial operations in 2028, with Bengaluru as the starting point. The first phase of operations will focus on airport transfers, which will help to establish the viability and demand for flying taxis. Afterward, Sarla Aviation plans to expand to other major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune, creating a network of air taxi services that could transform urban commuting.

In addition to its commercial ride-sharing flights, Sarla Aviation plans to offer a free air ambulance service, which could be a game-changer in critical situations. This dual-purpose approach of providing both commercial transport and emergency services could make the company a key player in the evolving urban mobility sector.

Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations

Sarla Aviation has already established strategic partnerships to facilitate its ambitious plans. Last year, the company partnered with Bengaluru International Airport to prepare for the rollout of its flying taxi service. The collaboration with the airport is crucial, as it provides the company with access to infrastructure and regulatory support to launch its service. This partnership also underscores the confidence that major stakeholders have in Sarla Aviation’s potential to reshape transportation in India.

Furthermore, Sarla Aviation is closely following global developments in the electric aircraft and eVTOL sectors, where other companies like The ePlane Company and US-based Archer Aviation are also vying for a slice of the growing market. However, Sarla Aviation’s unique focus on the Indian market gives it a significant edge, especially with its plans to launch affordable flying taxis tailored to the needs of Indian consumers.

The Future of Urban Mobility in India

The concept of electric flying taxis is still in its infancy, but the rapid pace of technological advancements and investments in the sector suggests that this form of transportation could soon become a reality in major urban areas. Sarla Aviation’s plans are a clear indicator that India is poised to lead the way in this emerging sector. The success of the company will depend on how effectively it can scale its operations, navigate regulatory hurdles, and deliver a service that meets the needs of consumers.

As traffic congestion worsens and environmental concerns grow, the demand for sustainable and efficient transportation solutions is only expected to increase. Flying taxis, powered by electric engines, could play a crucial role in addressing these challenges while providing a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
