OYO has announced a $10 million investment to boost the digital presence of G6 Hospitality, operator of Motel 6 and Studio 6 in the U.S. The investment aims to expand the Motel 6 website and My6 app, targeting a fourfold increase in app installations before the summer season. OYO plans to use advanced digital targeting and partnerships with Google and Microsoft to engage high-intent customers more effectively. Shashank Jain, Head of Online Revenue at G6 Hospitality, highlighted the focus on optimizing marketing spend and driving direct bookings, reducing reliance on third-party platforms. This investment follows OYO’s 2024 acquisition of G6 Hospitality from Blackstone Real Estate for $525 million. Building on this, OYO intends to add 150+ hotels under the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands in 2025, focusing on markets like Texas, California, Georgia, and Arizona.

Understanding OYO’s Business Model and Growth Trajectory

Founded in 2012 by Ritesh Agarwal, OYO started as Oravel Stays, a platform for budget accommodation listings, before rebranding to OYO in 2013. The company operates on a franchise model, partnering with small and medium-sized hotels to standardize services and offer affordable, quality accommodations to travelers. OYO provides these partner hotels with a full-stack technology suite, including property management systems, revenue management tools, and customer acquisition support, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and occupancy rates. OYO’s revenue model primarily revolves around charging a commission from its partner hotels for bookings made through its platform. This commission-based structure aligns OYO’s success with that of its partners, incentivizing the company to drive higher occupancy rates and better customer experiences. Over the years, OYO has attracted significant funding from prominent investors, including SoftBank, Sequoia Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, fueling its rapid expansion across India and into international markets.

Strategic Acquisition of G6 Hospitality

In September 2024, OYO announced its agreement to acquire G6 Hospitality, the parent company of the iconic Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands, from Blackstone Real Estate for $525 million in an all-cash transaction. This acquisition added approximately 1,500 franchised hotels across the U.S. and Canada to OYO’s portfolio, significantly expanding its North American presence. The deal was completed in December 2024, marking a pivotal moment in OYO’s global expansion strategy.

Enhancing Digital Capabilities

The recent $10 million investment is a strategic effort to enhance G6 Hospitality’s digital assets, focusing on the Motel 6 website and the My6 app. By quadrupling app installations before the summer season, OYO aims to increase direct bookings, thereby reducing dependency on third-party platforms and optimizing marketing expenditures. The collaboration with tech giants like Google and Microsoft is expected to facilitate targeted digital campaigns, reaching customers actively searching for accommodations and improving booking conversions.

Expansion Plans and Technological Upgrades

Looking ahead, OYO plans to accelerate G6 Hospitality’s growth by adding over 150 hotels under the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands in 2025. This expansion will focus on key markets such as Texas, California, Georgia, and Arizona, areas with significant demand for affordable and extended-stay accommodations. To support this growth, G6 Hospitality has partnered with HotelKey, a hospitality technology provider, to upgrade technological capabilities across its properties in the U.S. and Canada. These upgrades aim to enhance operational efficiency and provide a seamless experience for guests and franchise owners alike.

Financial Performance and Future Outlook

OYO’s financial performance has shown significant improvement, with a profit after tax of ₹166 crore in Q3 FY25, a six-fold increase from ₹25 crore in the same period the previous year. Revenue also rose to ₹1,695 crore, reflecting a 31% year-on-year growth. This strong financial performance, therefore, underscores the company’s successful expansion and strategic initiatives in key markets. Furthermore, it highlights the effectiveness of OYO’s targeted approach and commitment to growth. As a result, the company has been able to strengthen its position and achieve notable milestones in its core markets.

Background of G6 Hospitality

G6 Hospitality, established in 1962, is a leading economy lodging franchisor with nearly 1,500 locations under the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands across the United States and Canada. The company commits to making hospitality accessible to all through responsible business practices and offers franchisees unparalleled opportunities to build a legacy through ownership. Both Motel 6 and Studio 6 have earned recognition in the Entrepreneur Franchise 500® report, with Motel 6 ranking in the top 50 of all franchises.

Learnings for Startups and Entrepreneurs

OYO’s strategic initiatives demonstrate a clear path toward growth and market expansion. Its acquisition of G6 Hospitality highlights the significance of strategic acquisitions in broadening market presence and diversifying service offerings. In addition, investing in digital transformation—by enhancing websites and mobile applications—can significantly boost customer engagement and foster direct bookings. By leveraging partnerships with prominent technology companies like Google and Microsoft, OYO can improve its marketing strategies and better reach high-intent customers. Focusing on core markets with strong demand enables successful expansion and increased brand recognition, while collaborating with technology providers to upgrade operational efficiency ensures smoother processes and enhanced performance.
