Apple will start manufacturing AirPods at Foxconn’s Hyderabad facility in April 2025. Initially, production will cater to exports in the U.S. and European markets. This expansion follows Apple’s successful iPhone production in India. Foxconn has invested $400 million (approximately Rs 3,500 crore) in the plant, which will begin with small-scale production of AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). The production scale-up is expected over the next three to four months.

Apple aims to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on China. Trade tensions, rising tariffs on Chinese imports, and Apple’s long-term goal to shift at least 50% of its export manufacturing out of China are key drivers. India, already a major player in smartphone exports, stands to gain significantly. Apple’s iPhone exports from India reached $12.8 billion in 2024, and AirPods production further strengthens India’s role in Apple’s global strategy.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has been advocating for reduced import tariffs on wearables and other electronics to boost domestic production. Apple’s move could influence these policies while driving job creation and technological advancements. With surging demand for wireless audio devices, Apple’s decision to manufacture AirPods in India positions the country as a key hub for premium tech manufacturing.

1. Apple’s Manufacturing Model and Global Strategy

Apple follows an outsourced manufacturing model, relying on contract manufacturers like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. Foxconn has been instrumental in assembling iPhones in India and will now expand into AirPods production. Apple benefits from India’s skilled labor, government incentives, and lower production costs than China.

Apple’s revenue model thrives on premium hardware, software services, and accessories. AirPods lead the true wireless stereo (TWS) market, contributing significantly to Apple’s earnings. In 2024, Apple held a 23.1% global TWS market share, with 81.8 million units shipped.

2. Foxconn’s Investment and Hyderabad Facility

Foxconn, Apple’s key manufacturing partner, invested $400 million in August 2023 to establish the Hyderabad plant. The facility will initially produce AirPods 4 models before scaling up operations. Apple’s decision to produce AirPods in India aligns with its strategy to shift manufacturing outside China to reduce geopolitical risks and trade tensions.

3. Why Apple is Shifting Production to India

Apple’s expansion in India aligns with its global supply chain diversification strategy. Key factors driving this shift include:

  1. Rising Costs in China: Apple aims to move 50% of its export manufacturing away from China due to increasing labor costs and operational challenges.
  2. U.S.-China Trade Tensions: The U.S. government has doubled tariffs on Chinese hearables, making manufacturing in China less cost-effective.
  3. Government Incentives in India: India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme supports electronics manufacturing, offering financial benefits to companies like Apple.
  4. Expanding Domestic Market: While initial AirPods production targets exports, local sales could follow, given India’s booming consumer electronics market.

4. Impact on India’s Tech Ecosystem

Apple’s decision to manufacture AirPods in India strengthens the country’s position in global electronics manufacturing. India is already the second-largest smartphone manufacturer, and Apple’s iPhone exports from India reached $12.8 billion in 2024. The move is expected to:

  1. Generate thousands of jobs in the electronics manufacturing sector.
  2. Enhance India’s standing as a global hub for premium consumer electronics.
  3. Attract further foreign investment into India’s tech ecosystem.

5. Industry Insights and Future Prospects

Experts believe Apple’s expansion in India will reshape the country’s electronics landscape. The ICEA continues to push for lower import tariffs on electronics to improve India’s global competitiveness. Apple’s move may also encourage other tech giants to expand their manufacturing operations in India.

With AirPods production beginning in April, analysts expect Apple to explore further expansion, possibly manufacturing Beats headphones in India. Future AirPods models may integrate AI features and live-translation capabilities, reinforcing Apple’s commitment to innovation.

6. Learning for Startups and Entrepreneurs

  1. Supply Chain Diversification: Businesses should diversify supply chains to mitigate geopolitical risks and optimize costs.
  2. Leveraging Government Incentives: Understanding and utilizing government policies, such as India’s PLI scheme, can provide financial advantages.
  3. Adapting to Market Trends: Apple’s expansion in India highlights the importance of adapting to trade policies and consumer trends.
  4. Investing in Emerging Markets: Startups should explore manufacturing or expansion opportunities in high-growth markets like India.
